Design Process & Astrology
Since before I was born, my mother Denise - the resident astrological mind here at Designing with the Stars - has been an astrologer. As you may deduce, astrology and metaphysical teachings have been with me for all my life. I had a dream catcher above my bed as a kid and my house was dotted with gorgeous crystals my parents picked up over the years. Despite all this, it wasn’t until my 20’s when I took a more serious look at astrology and how it works. I didn’t just ask my mom to read my chart but to explain it in detail, and how the aspects worked, and what houses meant. Even today, I am by no means a professional astrologer but I have a better sense of it; more so than the casual horoscope reader, and enough to integrate it into business and life every day.
My passion is interior design, but after years in the industry, I was left wanting more. I wanted to defy the taupes and beiges I saw everywhere, and step out from the traditional structure of the design industry by putting forth my own creativity into the world. Well, how was I to do that? It was my brilliant mother - who got me to pursue design in the first place - who suggested I incorporate astrology with design. A fabulous idea, considering each and every one of us are wholly unique, even if we have the same placements or sun sign. This also appealed to my designer-focused brain, having already decided that I don’t want to be known for a particular style. The idea took root, and here we are today!
Astrology is an effective tool for anyone wishing to understand themselves and/or the world around them on a deeper level. To get a reading, or even follow astrology casually, requires us to engage with it and actively apply the lessons we learn to our lives to see the best results. Similarly, if we are ready to buy a house, renovate, or reconfigure, we must engage with and question what we want and need. What is working in our home? What is annoying and not working? Is our expectation as an inhabitant of this space aligning with the built environment? If not, how can we adjust either the space or our thinking? These are questions one must ask prior to, or during the process of, engaging a designer for a project. Astrology, and one’s birth chart, will help me as a designer answer these questions in ways the client might not be able to.
Primarily, said birth chart informs me (alongside our questionnaire) on what direction and style to apply to your design. I evaluate not just your Big 3 (Sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign) but any and all aspects of your chart. In every chart, there are subtleties that add depth and detail to the design I craft for my clients. By incorporating the birth chart information with all that we know about design, we are providing a highly personalized design that will reflect each and every client.
