Celeb Rooms Revisted: Pt 3 - Ryan Gosling

February 11, 20242 min read

In our final installment of this AI-testing series, we see how Midjourney interpreted the moody, sensual design we developed for Ryan Gosling's bedroom.

Our original design focused on Ryan's Scorpio sun and how his Pisces Rising and Capricorn Moon influenced his aesthetic. Of course, for a Scorpio, the bedroom is an important space so that's what we designed. Pisces infused a softer, almost whimsy tone to the otherwise moody and sensual space. His Cap moon kept the space more muted and on the masculine side, but without any hard lines. The colours were mostly inspired by his Scorpio and Pisces placements.

Midjourney did a decent job of interpreting the design; or perhaps by now I was better at writing the descriptions? The colours were certainly incorporated, although not exactly as I had placed them. I've noticed with AI that many intricate details aren't captured - details that make a design great or meaningful. The curtains are exactly as I'd imagined, but the bed is the complete opposite of what I selected. The lighting works, but isn't the same type of lighting (I originally had pendants on the side of the bed) and the rendering eliminated the floor lamp. The rug is too plain, despite my instructions. The wall colours work, though, and I'm happy to see how that turned out.

I think it's safe to say that AI has it's limitations. At times, those limiations are set by the user and how we interact with it. Mostly the program(s) fail to capture or render nuance and specific styles. It's these particular details, though, that truly make a design and helps both the designer and the end user relate to a work. For a simpler design, AI may prove to be a powerful visual tool that'll enable us to envision spaces or bring us fun ideas. Not that I've heard this point being made, but I don't think AI will replace designers and I don't think it'll be a one-stop-shop tool for us, either. In time, I can see it being used in collaboration with other software - 3DSMax or Sketchup maybe - to bring our ideas to life. But AI is not the human brain, and cannot fathom the worlds and rich textures we create.
